Garnett Lamon Burrell, age 96, of Demorest, passed away at his home on Saturday, April 15, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 20, 1926, in Mt. Airy, he was a son of the late Jesse Johnathan Burrell and Frances Maybell Loudermilk Burrell. Mr. Burrell was a United States Army Veteran, having proudly served his country during World War II with the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion Company C in the European Campaign. His division was attached to the 79th Division in the Rhur Valley and the Battle of the Rhine River. After the Rhine River crossing, the battalion was attached to the 101st Airborne liberating Kaufering IV, a Subcamp of Dachau, ending the campaign in Berchtesgaden, Germany. After the war, he was attached to the 42nd Division in Transportation until his discharge in July 1946. He received his Electrician’s License by attending North Georgia Tech on the G.I. Bill. After his military service and schooling, he worked for United Merchants at the Clarkesville Mill Location for over 40 years. Mr. Burrell enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and beekeeping. He also loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church and a former member of the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720 and the Civil Defense.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Elizabeth Ramsey Burrell; brothers, James Clinton “Bill” Burrell and J. Lloyd Burrell; sisters: Senna Starr, Minnie Stephens Shore, Stella Mae Norton, and Monteree Norton; and daughter-in-law, Jeanne Murray Burrell.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law: Walter Lamon Burrell and Peggy of Mt. Airy, Michael Charles Burrell of Mt. Airy, and Gregory Burrell and Lynn of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Burrell Johnson and Jeff of Anderson, SC; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Poole of Chamblee and Wilma Mullinax of Mt. Airy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2023, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart, with Rev. James Lyons and Rev. Keith Allison officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairfield Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military honors provided.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home.
