Two Habersham County 9th graders were hospitalized Thursday afternoon after suffering chemical burns in a science experiment.
According to Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper, the two male students were burned during a lab activity as a result of another student not following appropriate safety protocols.
“Although an investigation of the incident is ongoing, it does not appear there was malicious intent by the student who did not follow safety protocols,” says Cooper.
Habersham County E-911 dispatched units to the Ninth Grade Academy in Mt. Airy around 1:18 p.m. on February 2. EMS transported both of the injured students to the hospital. One of the students was treated and released. The other reportedly remains hospitalized at Grady Hospital in Atlanta.
The school system has not released the students’ names. The superintendent says school administrators are in contact with the parents of both injured students.
“The teacher in the lab acted swiftly to care for the students involved in the incident,” says Cooper. He also praised Habersham Emergency Services for its quick response and “exceptional care for our students.”
