Twenty feet and multiple firefighters are all that separated a Commerce family from potential disaster this morning. The detached garage at their home at 491 Hooper Road went up in flames before dawn.
At 1:37 a.m. on January 30, units from Banks County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the blaze. When they arrived at the single family residence, the garage was fully engulfed in flames. The residents were at the house located 20 feet from the burning garage.
Firefighters made a defensive attack and covered exposures to keep the fire from spreading, says Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols.
“The Fire was contained to the original structure, which was a total loss,” he says.
The Banks County Fire Department determined a wood heater in the shop may have ignited the fire. Fortunately, no one was injured.
