Now Hab awards cash prizes to spelling bee winners

Now Habersham was pleased to award cash prizes to this year’s Habersham County School District spelling bee winners.

Patrick Schupp received $100 for his first-place win. Patrick is a student in Mrs. Gunter’s 4th-grade class at Fairview Elementary School. His parents are Kristin and Brennan Schupp.

Julia Betzios from North Habersham Middle School received $50 as runner-up.

The top spellers from Habersham County’s eight elementary and three middle schools competed in the spelling bee on January 11. Schupp won in the 24th round.

The competition was held at the Habersham Central High School Performing Arts Center in Mt. Airy. High school principal Jonathan Stribling was the pronouncer. Dr. Chastity Adams and Terri Byers served as judges.

Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County annually sponsors the local Scripps Spelling Bee. VFL President Dr. Don Gnecco and county school superintendent Matthew Cooper presented trophies to the participants.

Now Habersham has supported VFL and the Scripps Spelling Bee in Habersham County for many years.

“As journalists, words are the tools of our trade. It’s nice to see young people take an interest in the English language and this academic competition. We’re happy to support it,” says Now Habersham publisher Joy Purcell.

VFL is a nonprofit agency with the mission to empower people through literacy so they can lead more productive and fulfilling lives.

The Scripps Spelling Bee aims to encourage children to perfect their spelling while widening their knowledge of the English language.
