Athens cyclist dies weeks after getting hit by SUV

A 68-year-old Athens man who was injured when an SUV hit him while he was out riding his bicycle has died.

On October 14, Athens-Clarke County police were notified that Carey Maxey passed away as a result of the injuries he sustained in the wreck on September 22.

At approximately 7:44 a.m. on September 22, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to the area of Prince Avenue and Franklin Street for a crash involving a vehicle and a cyclist.

The initial investigation indicated Maxey was traveling east on the sidewalk of Prince Avenue. A 2022 Hyundai Kona was traveling east on Prince Avenue in the inside lane.

The cyclist exited the sidewalk in an apparent attempt to cross Prince Avenue. As a result, the Hyundai Kona and the cyclist collided.

EMS transported the cyclist, later identified as Maxey, to an Athens area hospital. The driver of the Hyundai Kona was not injured.

This is the ninth fatal motor vehicle crash of 2022 in Athens-Clarke County.
