The Georgia Department of Corrections has confirmed the identity of the Lee Arrendale State Prison inmate who died earlier this month while in custody. Angela Anderson died on September 11 at the prison in Alto.
The Georgia Department of Corrections still declines to release information on the circumstances surrounding Anderson’s death. GDC Public Affairs Director Joan Heath says such a release could “significantly hinder the investigation.”
Heath previously confirmed that the Georgia Department of Correction’s Office of Professional Standards is looking into the matter. She refused to comment on whether there was any indication of staff negligence that may have contributed to Anderson’s death.
The Human Civil Rights Coalition of Georgia, a nonprofit whose stated mission is to improve the general treatment of the incarcerated population of Georgia, posted to its Facebook page that Anderson was killed. Multiple sources have reported the same to Now Habersham, but officials will not comment on those claims. Now Habersham continues to monitor this story and will provide updates as new information becomes available.
