Local church/civic leader dies

Funeral services are scheduled this weekend for Fred K. Hamby. Hamby was a respected business, church and civic leader in Habersham County. Hamby died Tuesday, October 7, after an extended illness. He was 87.

A World War II veteran and former UGA football/basketball player, Hamby settled in Habersham after the war and coached at North Habersham. After he left coaching he co-owned and operated Andrews–Hamby men’s store in Toccoa and later became owner of the State Farm Insurance Agency in Clarkesville.

Hamby was one of the founders of the Soque Recreational Department and a co-founder of the Habersham County Soup Kitchen. He also was actively involved with the county’s Laotian community and helped many of them earn their citizenship.

A Presbyterian, Hamby served as an active elder for many years. He served the Presbytery as chairman of the Committee on the Minister and as a representative to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Most recently, Hamby served as elder at River Point Community Church.

Hamby and his wife, Joan, were married for 41 years. They have five children.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, at the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel in Demorest. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Friday, October 10, at the funeral home.
