Coroner releases name of woman found dead near Toccoa train tracks

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a Seneca, South Carolina, woman whose body was found Thursday near railroad tracks in Toccoa. Toccoa police responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. on June 16 after a 911 caller reported a possible dead body near the tracks on Currahee Street at Highland Avenue.

Stephens County Chief Deputy Coroner Lee Woody on Saturday identified the woman as 58-year-old Deborah H. Elmore.

Police notified the GBI. An agent and the GBI Crime Scene Unit spent several hours with police investigating the scene Thursday. The coroner’s office will transport Elmore’s body to the state crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy.

Authorities have not given any indication as to how Elmore died.

“The case is being led by GBI Region 8 in White County,” says Chief Deputy Woody. “They’re leading the investigation, so, there’s nothing to release right now because it’s still ongoing.”

Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize told local media his department will provide updates “as the investigation allows.”
