North Carolina driver charged in wreck that killed a Toccoa man

State troopers have charged a North Carolina man with second-degree vehicular homicide in the Memorial Day death of a Toccoa man.

40-year-old Jake Boyd died in the crash around 3:53 p.m. Monday at the intersection of GA 365 and GA 184.

According to SFC Donnie Sadler of the Georgia State Patrol, 61-year-old Richard Cabe of Bryson City was driving a 1996 Ford Thunderbird south on GA 365 when he failed to yield at the stoplight. The Thunderbird struck the driver’s side of the Jeep as Boyd passed through the intersection on a green light, headed westbound on GA 184.

The impact of the crash caused the Jeep to overturn. It landed upright in the roadway. The Thunderbird spun out and wound up in the middle of the road.

Sadler says Boyd suffered fatal head and neck injuries. Cabe was not injured.

Troopers arrested Cabe and charged him with vehicular homicide and failure to obey a traffic signal. He was booked into the Stephens County Detention Center.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collison Reconstruction Team assisted GSP Post 7 with the crash investigation.
