Six White County firefighters are being honored for their recent lifesaving efforts. On Monday, the White County Public Safety Department awarded certificates of commendation to the first responders for their selflessness and service in saving two patients’ lives.
Firefighters Austin Brown, Jackson Cantrell, and Shad Sosebee were recognized for saving a person who was shot. On October 8, 2021, the three responded to a call on Leatherford Road and found the patient suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. They applied a tourniquet that stopped the life-threatening bleed and saved the patient’s life.
Firefighters Steve Hopper, Tommy Steen, and AJ Staton saved a patient from an overdose. On April 28, 2022, the firefighters responded to a medical call on Tommy Gowart Road. The patient had overdosed and was in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, the firefighters began CPR and administered Narcan and saved the patient’s life.
White County Public Safety Director David Murphy wrote in the firefighters’ commendation letters that because of their “quick action and decision making abilities, a citizen’s life was saved.”
“Your training and years of experience undoubtedly prepared you for this moment,” he said. “Your dedication and genuine concern for the welfare of others is admirable and inevitably appreciated by all.”
