The Banks County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of Highway 441 and Shady Grove Road in Homer. No deputies were injured, but the suspect in the shooting is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that a Banks County Sheriff’s Office deputy was driving northbound on US Highway 441 in an unmarked police SUV when a speeding truck started to pass him. The GBI reports that the deputy flashed his emergency lights, at which point the truck, which was also towing a small trailer, swerved into the deputy’s lane. The GBI says the SUV and truck did not hit each other, but both left the highway and came to a stop on an embankment.
The driver of the truck, Eric Edward Webb, 43, of Franklin, NC, allegedly got out of the truck with a hatchet in his hand. The GBI reports that Webb began beating on the deputy’s driver’s side window with the hatchet, breaking the glass. The GBI says the deputy fired at Webb while still seated inside his SUV, striking him multiple times.
Webb was taken to a nearby hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. The Georgia State Patrol assisted with this investigation. More details of the investigation will come from the GBI once the investigation is complete.
