Talmadge Drive in northeast Habersham County is back open to traffic after being closed due to a brush fire.

Georgia Forestry crews arrived with bulldozers to create a break in the woods where the fire is burning. (HCSO)

Firefighters working with crews from the Georgia Forestry Commission were able to contain the fire and keep it from spreading.

The fire was started Saturday afternoon by a homeowner in the area burning yard debris, according to HCSO Public Information Officer Kevin Angell.

“The winds and dry weather are not a good time to burn yard debris or even have bonfires,” Angell stresses. “Embers can leave small fires and create larger, uncontrolled fires that endanger surrounding property, houses, and potentially the safety of our communities as a whole.”

North and Central Georgia are under a Red Flag Warning through 8 p.m. Saturday, March 26, due to the dangerous fire conditions.
