The Clarkesville City Council is now down two council members, with former Councilwoman Roxie Barron announcing her resignation from the council.
The City announced Barron’s resignation Thursday morning, saying her resignation was effective March 16. She has served on the council since 2018.
Her resignation comes after her decision to permanently relocate to Florida to be closer to family.
“As a lifelong resident, it has been a distinct honor to serve with the Council and serve Clarkesville in this capacity for nearly four years,” Barron said in a press release. “I challenge all of you to remain committed to the growth momentum that will continue to move our beloved hometown forward!”
There are now two posts vacant on the council following the unexpected death of Councilman Steven Ward and Barron’s resignation. In qualifying for filling Ward’s former seat, which was extended due to no one qualifying in the original qualifying period, only one person qualified.
The city will hold a special election to fill her vacancy and Ward’s on Tuesday, Nov. 8, during the general election.
Qualifying for Barron’s post will begin Aug.1 at 8:30 a.m. and go through Thursday, Aug. 4 at 4:30 p.m., and Friday, Aug. 5 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. The qualifying fee will be $18.00.
This is the second councilmember resignation this week, with former Alto Councilman Turner Griffith announcing his resignation via letter on Tuesday.
