A Toccoa woman remains in intensive care this morning after leaping from a moving ambulance over the weekend in Toccoa. Stephens County EMS was transporting the 40-year-old, non-emergency patient to the county hospital for treatment when the incident occurred.
The Georgia State Patrol was dispatched to the scene at GA 184 near Short Street in Toccoa around 8 p.m. Saturday, February 5. Troopers identified the patient as Amber Chambers.
“According to EMS personnel in the vehicle, Ms. Chambers sprung to her feet from a seated position and jumped out of the rear doors of the medical unit as the vehicle was in motion,” says GSP Post 7 Commander Donnie Sadler.
The ambulance was traveling at an estimated 35 mph. Chambers fell to the pavement and sustained visible ankle and head injuries, Sadler says.
EMS personnel attended to Chambers at the scene. An air ambulance flew her to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
Sadler says Chambers remains in the intensive care unit at NGMC. No charges will be filed against her or the EMS driver.
