CLEVELAND – The fundraising committee working to build a new White County Public Library met last week, along with several people from the community who wanted to show their support.
Nadine Wardenga, speaking for the group, took a look back 40 years ago when the current library was built and talked about the current needs. Wardenga said, “We’re going to dig into pockets and express the importance of this library to our neighbors and friends and businesses. We want to raise somewhere around $150,000 of money to prove to the county and the cities that we really need a library.”
The group is seeking the funds to show the county and the cities that a modern public library is needed, with space to grow, computer labs, and large children’s area, and a community room.
The Cleveland and Helen Libraries currently share 10,000 sq. ft of space, which falls well below the state standards.
Delana Knight, Director at Northeast Georgia Regional Library System, said the state of Georgia does offer some matching grants up to $2 million dollars, but that will take a lot of matching funds to obtain.
