Flashing lights and sirens will provide the backdrop for a fun fall family outing this weekend in White County. The Sautee Nacooche Center will host Touch-A-Truck: A Family Safety, Health and Preparedness Fair on Saturday, October 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This free event will feature emergency vehicles, a helicopter fly-in, children’s activities, and family support resources. Smokey Bear, the Night Rider Car, Wonder Woman and Batman will make appearances. There will also be raffles, a scavenger hunt, and refreshments.
During the festival, the Sautee Nacoochee Center’s museums and galleries will be open to explore at no charge.
This is the second Touch-A-Truck event in Sautee since 2018. The SNC Board of Directors and the all-volunteer Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are organizing the event. Similar to the longstanding Habersham E-911 Children’s Fun Festival, organizers say the purpose of Touch-A-Truck goes beyond fun.
“One of the goals of this program is to help children become comfortable with first responders and youth to think about safety and emergency preparedness in their community,” says SNC Executive Director Patrick Brennan.
Career and volunteer first responders will be on hand to talk about their work and equipment. Personnel from White County Public Health and Public Safety, the Georgia Forestry Commission, and others will answer questions and offer information about their services.
The Public Health Breast Cancer Awareness Program will be on campus recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Sautee Nacoochee Center is located at 283 GA-255 in Sautee Nacoochee.
Habersham’s E-911 event will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, at the Habersham County Fairgrounds at 4235 Toccoa Highway in Clarkesville.
