Scammers trying to force HEMC members to pay by phone

Habersham EMC is alerting its members not to fall for the latest scam. The cooperative says someone has been calling HEMC members threatening to turn off their power unless they pay immediately over the phone.

This scam has been run before and HEMC reminds its members that employees will never call them asking them for payment by phone.

If you receive such a call, the cooperative’s spokesperson Nicole Dover says you should hang up and report it to local law enforcement. “Do not give out any personal information,” she urges.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your HEMC account you may contact them directly at (800) 640–6812. HEMC members may also monitor their accounts through the online portal or SmartHub mobile app.
