Demorest sign ordinance up for reevaluation

The City of Demorest has imposed a 90-day moratorium on its sign ordinance to review and discuss possible amendments to the policies Demorest follows when it comes to signage.

City Attorney Thomas Mitchell recommended imposing the moratorium at their July 6 meeting, which will apply to all signs requiring a permit in the City of Demorest.

Demorest Mayor Rick Austin tells Now Habersham that this time period will allow the city council to delve into the current ordinance, address areas that have changed and review legalities. Once the council has put together updates to the ordinance, they will bring it forward to Demorest citizens for a public hearing in which citizens can share their thoughts.

Austin says that the possible ordinance changes will reflect the city’s plan to honor citizens’ first amendment rights while preserving the historical character of Demorest.
