Teen injured in boat explosion leaves hospital

A 16-year-old girl who was badly burned in a boat explosion on Lake Lanier has been released from the hospital. Taylor Coleman returned home to Suwanee on Friday after spending nearly two months at Grady Hospital in Atlanta.

Taylor and her family were on a boat near the Margaritaville Resort at Lake Lanier Islands on Mother’s Day when the boat ignited after refueling.

The explosion injured all five family members. Taylor and her 13-year-old brother Gunner were airlifted to the Grady Burn Center. He was released from the hospital at the end of May.

Taylor suffered extensive burns to her legs, arms, feet, and stomach and had several surgeries.

She recently walked for the first time since the accident. On a Facebook page set up to provide updates, her mother shared that Taylor walked three feet last Friday and 120 feet on Monday.

A GoFundMe account set up to help the family with medical expenses has raised nearly $61,000. Family friends overseeing that account say it’s been an uphill battle, but “today the family finally gets to start back into some sort of normal all being back together and starting the home recovery process as a complete family.”
