Gainesville man charged in McDonald’s shooting

A Gainesville man accused of shooting an employee at McDonald’s in Jefferson remains behind bars.

Police charged 26-year-old Devonte Watts with multiple felony counts, including one count of aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He’s also charged with a misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm near a public highway.

Officers with the Jefferson Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at McDonald’s on U.S. 129 North around 9 p.m. Thursday.

According to a news release from Jefferson police, witnesses told officers that Watts drove up to the drive-thru and ordered food. He then got into an argument with an employee and allegedly spat at the employee through the pickup window.

The argument continued, and the employee went outside to the drive-thru to confront the customer. As Watts drove away, he allegedly fired a shot toward the employee, the news release states.

The bullet hit a second employee, who had come outside the restaurant to defuse the situation.

The injured employee was taken to an area hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Police announced Friday evening that Watts had been arrested and charged. They listed his home address as Stone Mountain, but online jail records show he is from Gainesville. No bond has been set.
