Butch Miller, one of the top Republicans in the state Senate, is running for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.
The Gainesville Republican launched his campaign Tuesday. He’s running to succeed Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, who said he would not seek a second term earlier this month.
“As a state senator, I’ve worked with visionary conservative leaders to make our state the No. 1 state for business and a safe haven for the conservative, traditional values that made our state and nation great,” Miller said. He’s running on a pro-life, jobs-friendly platform.
First elected to office in 2010, the 64-year-old Miller is the elected leader of the Senate Republican majority. His colleagues have elected him president pro tem three times.
Miller represents the state’s 49th district which includes most of Hall County. Previously he said he would not challenge Duncan if the incumbent sought a second term.
Duncan has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and of efforts to overturn Georgia’s presidential election. He also criticized his party’s efforts to make sweeping changes to Georgia’s election laws this session. He left the chamber in protest over a proposal that would have restricted who can cast an absentee ballot.
Duncan said he plans to take his call for a reimagined GOP to the national level, launching an organization called GOP 2.0.
