(Helen)- Action by a Sautee-Nachoochee couple may have prevented a much bigger problem, and possibly a dangerous situation, at a bridge south of Helen.
Suzy Neal and her husband Clark walk their dog Annie almost every day on the Helen to Hardman Trail. Suzy says they have been watching a big logjam grow in the Chattahoochee River at the bridge under State Route 75.
Instead of complaining about it and posting information on social media, Suzy’s husband suggested they contact the Georgia Department of Transportation to notify them about the situation.
So they did.
Suzy says GDOT’s website has a form that makes it easy to contact them. She filled out the form and provided information to GDOT on Monday. By Tuesday afternoon, she received an email saying it had been cleared.
“That’s some fast work, especially for the government,” she says.
The couple walked their dog along the trail Tuesday afternoon and, sure enough, the guard rail had been taken down and a big piece of equipment was in there, with the logs piled off the bridge.
Suzy Neal encourages other residents to reach out to the Georgia Department of Transportation if they see a problem on a state-maintained highway or bridge by utilizing the online form.
