Georgia State Troopers cited a Cornelia woman for distracted driving and following too closely after she rear-ended a pickup on Cannon Bridge Road. The wreck injured a passenger and shut down the road for more than six hours Monday as crews repaired utility lines damaged in the crash.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, Cassandra Marsengill, 27, was driving a 2010 Honda CR-V on Cannon Bridge Road around 9 a.m. when she struck the rear of a 1999 Ford F350 pickup truck. After impact, the truck struck a utility pole with the passenger side. Then the Honda struck the Ford a second time, driver side to driver side.
The driver of the pickup, 69-year-old Johnny Stencil of Cornelia and Marsengill, both sustained minor injuries. They declined medical transport, the State Patrol says. The wreck injured a passenger in Stencil’s truck, 68-year-old Guy Brown, also of Cornelia. Habersham EMS transported him to Habersham Medical Center for treatment.
The collision broke a utility pole, causing electrical power lines, a transformer, telephone, and fiber optics lines to fall. “The electrical fuse tripped as intended, cutting the power to all the fallen lines,” says John Getty of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.
The Georgia Department of Transportation closed the roadway while crews made repairs and reopened the road around 3:30 p.m.
