The state’s largest utility provider is warning its customers against scammers and imposters. Georgia Power says there’s been a recent rise in payment scams and in criminals posing as company employees.
Georgia Power urges customers to be cautious when contacted by an unverified person claiming to be a Georgia Power representative. Watch out for deceptive caller-ID displays, official-sounding automated calls, and in-person calls demanding immediate payment over the phone. When an account’s overdue, Georgia Power contacts the primary account holder by pre-recorded phone message or mail asking them to call to discuss the account.
“The company will never ask a customer to provide a credit card or pre-paid debit card number over the phone or request customers to pay using alternate methods like BitCoin,” says Georgia Power spokesperson John Kraft. “Additionally, the company will never send employees into the field to collect payment in person or ask a customer to pay anywhere other than an Authorized Payment Location.”
Here are some steps you can take to guard against being targeted:
- Don’t fall for fake 1-800 numbers. Hang up on anyone who calls claiming to be from Georgia Power and demanding payment to avoid disconnection. If you receive such a call, contact Georgia Power’s official customer service line at 888-660-5890 to report it.
- Wondering if the phone number or address is legitimate? You may verify all Georgia Power contact information at www.GeorgiaPower.com/ContactUs.
- Delete all emails that demand immediate payment or personal information.
- Make sure anyone visiting your home or business on a Georgia Power service call is in uniform. They should have a photo ID and vehicle marked with the company logo. If you suspect a problem, do not let them into your home. Call Georgia Power and law enforcement if you’re concerned.
