How the siege on the Capitol hit home

After President Donald Trump called on his supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol earlier today, supporters stormed the Capitol, resulting in at least one person killed, reporters attacked, and 25 Capitol police injured. As coverage from Washington D.C. makes the headlines, Habersham County residents and Now Habersham readers from across the globe are voicing their opinions, and feelings, on Tuesday’s events.

Many Habersham citizens are greatly disturbed by the events in Washington, reader Nicole Bailey writing that she is “in tears” watching the coverage. “Honorable men and women gave their lives for our right to vote,” Janelle Nix Whitfield wrote.

Others compared the riots in Washington to those that broke out during the Black Lives Matter protests after the killing of George Floyd in late May. “This is a nightmare, but looting and burning down cities is peaceful protest, right?” Lori Runyan Pearson wrote. “Give me a break.”

Billie Ann Tarango offered a reminder of the peaceful protest and unity rally that took place in Clarkesville. “There is a difference between rioters and peaceful protesters. What we are seeing right now are rioters,” She wrote.

“Looting and rioting wasn’t okay and storming the Capitol over debunked claims isn’t either,” Nevaja Brown wrote. “Don’t know why people condone either.”

Some have expressed support for the riots, citing debunked and false claims that the presidential election was rigged. Due to the false and misleading nature of these claims, and any encouragement of violence, we will not be sharing these comments.
