Georgia State Troopers say a fuel tank driver was distracted when he ran off the road and overturned, spilling his cargo, Christmas night in Banks County.

Walter Clarence Catledge, 55, of Gillsville, was injured in the wreck. He was driving north on US 441/SR 15 near Free Drive in Banks County when the accident happened shortly after 8 p.m. on December 25.

After crashing, the fuel leaked out of the tanker, causing officials to shut down a section of the highway between Free Drive and Shady Grove Road.

Due to the size of the fuel spill, Banks County requested assistance from the Hall County HazMat team. The Georgia Department of Transportation and SRS Environmental Services also helped with the cleanup.

EMS transported Catledge to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment of his injuries.

The investigating Trooper cited him for failure to maintain lane.
