A crying baby saved a family from tragedy overnight in Habersham County. The occupants of an Airbnb told officials that when they went to check on the child, they discovered fire burning across one part of the rental.

The two adults and two small children safely exited the cabin at 520 Turkey Crest Drive and called for help. Habersham County 911 dispatched firefighters to the scene around 12:27 a.m. Tuesday, December 22. When they arrived, the 1200-square-foot structure, located off of GA 15/US 441 near the Habersham/Rabun County line, was heavily engulfed in flames.

“Due to the amount of fire, personnel entered into a defense mode of operations in extinguishing the fire from the exterior,” says Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black. He says the fire appears to have started in the porch area, but investigators are still trying to determine what caused it.

The family moved to another location, and the Red Cross was not notified.

Firefighters from Habersham, Tallulah Falls, and Lee Arrendale cleared the scene after about two hours.
