Woman dies following multi-vehicle wreck in Stephens County

fatal accident

One woman is dead and several others injured following a four-vehicle crash near Toccoa. Lisa Wertz, 48, of Martin, was fatally injured when the car she was riding in was struck multiple times.

The accident happened around 6:24 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, on GA-17 at Whispering Pines Road.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Kathy Loggins of Toccoa was driving a Kia Forte south on Highway 17 when she failed to yield while turning left. A Honda Pilot driven by Kyle Weir of Lavonia was traveling north and struck the side of the Kia as it crossed the northbound lanes. The Kia came to an uncontrolled final rest on the roadway without any lights.

A Toyota 4Runner driven by Holly Black of Toccoa hit the Kia head-on, causing the Kia to travel across the road where a Chevrolet Tahoe then struck it.

Lifeflight choppers from Anderson, South Carolina, transported the seriously injured patients to area hospitals. Paramedics flew Loggins to a hospital in Greenville. They transported Wertz to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where she died a short time later.

Weir and Black both suffered minor injuries. EMS transported Black to Habersham Medical Center in Demorest for treatment. The driver of the Tahoe, Jeff Dover of Toccoa, was not injured in the crash.

The State Patrol did not have an update on Loggins’ condition. Charges are pending against her.
