Towns County and Rabun clinched big wins Friday as Habersham and Stephens County sat out the night due to COVID.
#1 Rabun County 63 – Elbert County 7
Rabun County shows no sign of slowing down after an easy 63-7 win at Elbert County. The #1-ranked Cats (8-1; 2-0 in 8-AA) laid claim to a seventh straight region championship game next week. Elbert County (2-5; 1-1) provided little resistance, as the Cats scored just over 40 seconds in on a Lang Windham 86-yd TD run as part of a 49-7 first half. Rabun scored 4 times in the first 5 minutes of play.
#9 Cherokee Bluff 28 – Dawson County 27
The Tigers tried but failed to stretch their four-game winning streak Friday against undefeated Cherokee Bluff. The Bears edged out the Tigers, 28-27. With the win, Cherokee Bluff claimed the inside track to the region title game against North Hall.
Lumpkin County 13 – White County 49
Notch another win for the Warriors. In their final home game of the regular season, White County evened their region record Friday, defeating Lumpkin County at home 49-13.
White County Quarterback J Ben Haynes made his return to the field last night for the Warriors, but the night, or at least the first quarter, belonged to Silas Mulligan. White County put 35 points on the board in the first quarter alone, and it was Mulligan who was responsible for 4 of those 5 touchdowns. The Warriors put up 14 more points in the second quarter, going into the half with a 49-0 lead. The coaches agreed to let the clock run in the second half, and White County played its full bench, allowing the Indians some space to put points on the board.
The Warriors are on the road next Friday when they travel to Ellijay to take on the Gilmer Bobcats.
#3 Commerce 48 – Social Circle 22
Coming of a well-earned bye week, Commerce entered the final stretch of the season rested and ready and it showed. The Tigers defeated Social Circle Friday away, 48 -22. Next up for Commerce, are two region deciding games with Washington-Wilkes and Lincoln County.
Towns County 20 – Greene County 0
Towns County grabbed a win for the first time since September 18. It came with a long bus ride but was worth it to boost their confidence and record. Towns County shutout its home host Green County, 20-0.
Habersham Central
The Raiders canceled their homecoming game after region rival Central Gwinnett backed out due to the coronavirus. That game and its halftime homecoming festivities are rescheduled for 6 p.m. November 17 at Raider Stadium.
Stephens County
There Indians were set to host Hart County Friday but canceled after a coaching staff member and team member tested positive for COVID. Members of the SCHS football team also were quarantined due to exposure in class.
Next week’s game against Oconee County will be re-evaluated next week. The football team will not practice for the remainder of this week but will continue practice next week with those that were not exposed.
