Local law enforcement is still searching for two people suspected of stealing thousands of dollars from a business in Demorest over the weekend. The suspects fled on foot following a police chase that ended in White County.
During the early morning hours of Sunday, September 26, deputies were dispatched to a burglary in progress call at Blue Ridge Tobacco located at 2146 Highway 105 in Demorest.
“Upon arrival, deputies observed two subjects running from the rear door of the building into a wooded area behind the business,” says Habersham Sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Wurtz. Deputies pursued the subjects but were unable to locate them. Minutes later, deputies located and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a red 2011 Ford F250 seen leaving the area.
“The subjects refused to stop and deputies pursued the vehicle into White County,” says Wurtz. The pursuit ended when the red truck ran down an embankment, through a field, and into the woodline along GA-17 Alternate. The subjects then fled on foot into the wooded area.
The preliminary investigation revealed that approximately $7,000 in cash was taken from the business, according to Wurtz. He says none of the money has been recovered. The investigation continues.
