The 3rd Annual Dec A Duck Contest and drawing for the 9th Annual VFL Rubber Duck “Race” will be held this Saturday, September 12 at the City of Clarkesville Gazebo. The cleverly decorated ducks will be on display from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. when they will be judged by a panel of three for Most Creative, Best All Around, and Best Literature/Book Theme. Attendees can vote for the fourth category, People’s Choice until 1 p.m.
Attendees also may purchase tickets for the Duck “Race” drawing from 9 am. until 1 p.m. The river race had to be canceled this year out of concern for volunteers and the difficulty to social distance in the river while catching ducks.
The drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m. with the winning tickets drawn by Clarkesville Mayor Barrie Aycock and VFL Volunteer of the Year Delana Knight Schuermann.
Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. First place wins $1000, 2nd place wins $500 and 3rd place wins $250.
Voting for Dec A Duck People’s Choice also can be done on the Volunteers for Literacy Facebook page by clicking ‘like’ on the preferred photo. The deadline to vote on Facebook is Friday, September 11, at 9 p.m.
Additionally, tickets for the duck race drawing may be purchased online until Friday at noon at www.vflhabersham.com.

“We have been thrilled to see the creativity and thought that went into this year’s Dec A Ducks,” said VFL Director Phylecia Wilson. “They are all so cleverly done and we hope folks will come by the Clarkesville Gazebo on Saturday to see them. And, of course, purchase tickets for the duck race drawing.” Children’s books also will be given to younger attendees, Wilson added.
Most of the Dec A Ducks are on display at Sweet ReLeaf on Washington Street in Clarkesville through Friday. Each of the Dec A Duck entrants are sponsors and supporters of VFL.
Proceeds from duck race drawing tickets sales benefit literacy programs in Habersham County. Programs include The Dictionary Project in which VFL gives dictionaries to all third grade students in Habersham County Schools (HCS ); sponsorship of the Scripps Spelling bee for grades four through eight in HCS; partnership with HCS, Piedmont School of Education, and Habersham Libraries to sponsor One Book Habersham annually; encouraging reading for all ages through 11 Little Free Libraries in the county; teaching English to immigrants in the community through the VFL English Language Acquisition Program; providing books for summer reading for underserved children: and maintaining the VFL Book Bank from which thousands of books for all ages are distributed annually.
