Someone burning leaves caused a woods fire Friday afternoon off of Double Bridge Connector in Demorest, according to firefighters.
At around 4 p.m. April 3, Habersham county 911 dispatched Demorest Station 5 to a possible brush fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found a large wooded area smoldering, producing heavy smoke behind a house.
Station 5 requested assistance from Habersham County Emergency Services. Engine 14 and Brush 13 responded. Firefighters quickly gained control and extinguished the area.
The fire damaged the side of a garage on the property. No one was injured.
Georgia Forestry personnel were called to assist and ensure all hotspots were extinguished. Officials say the fire got out of control because the burn pile was left unattended.
North Georgia was under a high fire danger warning on Friday due to low humidity and wind.
The Forestry Service reminds you to always contact your local burn permitting authorities before burning outdoors.
