Qualifying ends for May 19th primary

Nine local candidates face no opposition. Gasaway returns to the political arena.

The slate is now set and the campaign is officially underway.

Qualifying for Georgia’s May 19, 2020, General Primary and Non-Partisan/Special Election ended at noon on Friday, March 6. There was one last-minute surprise as former District 28 State Representative Dan Gasaway qualified to run in the District 50 State Senate race. Gasaway previously had not publicly announced his intentions.

Franklin Springs Mayor Lee Moore also added his name to the list of now- six candidates vying for the seat being vacated by incumbent District 50 State Senator John Wilkinson.

Habersham County Tax Commissioner June Black was the last local candidate to qualify to run for reelection. She’s among nine Habersham County incumbents who do not face opposition in the primary. The others are Board of Education members Doug Westmoreland and Robert Barron; Chief Magistrate Gerald Johnson; Clerk of Superior Court David Wall; Coroner Kasey McEntire; Solicitor General Bill Oliver; State Court Judge Steve Campbell; and Superior Court Judge Chan Caudell.

One Democrat qualified to run for Habersham County Commission. Mike Adams will face the winner of the District 5 Republican primary in the general election in November.

In all, 53 names will appear on the May 19th primary ballot in Habersham. The complete list is below.

If you want to vote in the May 19th primary you must register to vote by April 20, 2020. (Registration for the March 24th presidential primary ended on Feb. 24.)
