Cornelia’s Wisteria Civic Club (WCC) will reach a significant milestone during the first week in May. Founded as the “Wisteria Garden Club” in 1965, the group is celebrating 50 years of community service in the city.
Current WCC President Sophia Primer was on hand at Tuesday’s Cornelia City Council meeting to receive an official proclamation from Mayor James Irby declaring May 30, 2015 Wisteria Civic Club of Cornelia Day. The special day coincides with the club’s anniversary party planned for the Community House.
“Ms. Beatrice Dunn would be so proud,” Primer says. “She would be so proud because she worked so hard to get the club started.”
In the Cornelia of 1965, Ms. Dunn and her friends were shut out of most white social clubs so she formed her own. The ensuing decades have seen the group’s mission evolve to reflect the many different challenges facing the community.
The Cornelia proclamation names just a few of the group’s accomplishments including raising funds for Volunteers for Literacy, Habersham Christian Learning Center, Habersham Soup Kitchen, Habersham Medical Center, the Regional African American Museum of Northeast Georgia and the Alliance for African American Music. WCC also created the Back to School Bash in 2006 which continues to help hundreds of school-age children each year throughout Habersham County.
