East Jackson High coach arrested for alleged sexual contact with student

A local high school assistant basketball coach has been arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with a student.

Michael Lee Stanley, 29, of Royston was arrested on Jan. 15. Officials charged him with four counts of first-degree improper sexual contact by a school employee.

The sheriff’s office says the incidents allegedly occurred in Banks County and involved an East Jackson High School female student. At the time, Stanley was employed as a paraprofessional and assistant basketball coach at the high school.

“As soon as we learned of the potential of inappropriate conduct, we turned the investigation over to authorities and Mr. Stanley does not work for Jackson County Schools any longer,” says county school superintendent Dr. April Howard.

The Banks County Sheriff’s Office took Stanley into custody. He’s now out of jail on $20,000 bond. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Capt. Carissa McFadden says the investigation is still active and ongoing.
