A Stone Mountain man faces two charges of felony aggravated assault on a peace officer following a Jan. 14 traffic stop by Hall County Sheriff’s deputies.
Sheriff’s Office investigators obtained warrants for the arrest of Marvin Tard Jr., 47, for driving his vehicle at the two deputies involved in the traffic stop near the intersection of Mill Street and Athens Street.
Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office secured warrants for the charges of possession of cocaine, possession of drug-related objects, fleeing or attempting to elude and a tail light violation.
The Georgia State Patrol has also charged Tard with several traffic-related offenses, including DUI, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies made contact with a driver, later identified as Tard, around 1:10 a.m. Tuesday after pulling him over on Mill Street at Athens Street for a broken tail light.
“At some point during the stop, the adult male driver put his vehicle in reverse and accelerated, ramming into a patrol car,” Booth said in a news release. “Following the crash, the suspect drove off, and one deputy fired his service weapon at the driver, hitting the man in his arm.”
Tard’s vehicle then collided with a utility pole a short distance down the street. Medics were called to the scene and Tard was taken to an area hospital with what officials described as non-life threatening injuries.
The Gainesville Police Department and Georgia State Patrol assisted at the scene, Booth said.
The GBI was called in to investigate the shooting. It’s the second officer-involved shooting the agency has investigated this year, according to GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles.

The two deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.
Tard was taken into custody and booked into the Hall County jail Tuesday afternoon.
