Fire investigators are working to determine what caused a mobile home to go up in flames early Tuesday. The blaze broke out just before 2 a.m. on Dec. 31 in the 600 block of Half Moon Crest Court off of Highway 115 west of Clarkesville.
A caller reported the fire to Habersham 911. When Clarkesville firefighters arrived, the mobile home was fully engulfed in flames.
Habersham County and Lee Arrendale firefighters also responded to the scene. Due to a lack of fire hydrants in the area, crews had to use multiple pumper trucks to haul in over 4,000 gallons of water to fight the fire. By 3 a.m. they had extinguished it.
“The official cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but it appears to have started from the front of the mobile home near the hot water heater,” Habersham County Fire Battalion Chief Dwight McNally tells Now Habersham.
The residents safely escaped the burning home. Crews were made aware of a small puppy inside the structure but once the fire was out they were unable to locate it.
The home was a total loss and was not insured, according to officials.
