Fiery rear-end crash injures two people in Demorest

The Georgia State Patrol charged a Cleveland man for following too closely in a fiery chain-reaction rear-end crash that injured two people Saturday in Demorest.

The accident happened around 11:33 a.m. on GA 105/Cannon Bridge Road near the intersection with Double Springs Road.

54-year-old Daniel Charles Smith was charged in the wreck. He was traveling north in a 2017 Ford Transit Van when he rear-ended a 2011 Chevrolet HHR driven by 64-year-old Carol Allen of Cornelia. The State Patrol says Allen was stopped behind a 2012 Toyota Corolla that was attempting to turn left into a driveway.

The impact of the crash caused the van to catch on fire. It pushed the HHR into the Corolla which was driven by 49-year-old Lisa Thomason of Mt. Airy.

The wreck injured both women. Habersham EMS transported Allen by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment. Thomason was not transported to the hospital.

Smith was not injured in the wreck.
