Maryville, TN – The Piedmont College men’s tennis team rolled earlier today in a 8-1 win over USA South foe Maryville College taking care of the Scots on their home courts for the big conference win.
The Lions are now 5-6 overall moving their conference record to an even 2-2 placing them 6th in the league standings. However, the match with the Scots starts a stretch of five consecutive conference matches to end the regular season with four of those five, including today’s match at Maryville, coming on the road.
Winning at #1 doubles was the pairing of Matthew Metzger and Nathan Metzger who move to 6-5 in doubles action after the 8-1 victory while the #2 win went to Mason Riza and Brent Jenkins who are now 2-0 in 2015 after an 8-2 victory. Robbie Werner and Trey Martin accounted for the win at #3 doubles knocking off Maryville’s Dakota McMahan and Gabriel Rodriguez 8-2.
The Lions’ only loss came at #1 singles where Daniel Silva managed a three-set decision over youngster Nathan Metzger. Winning at #2 singles was Matthew Metzger with his 6-1, 6-2 decision over Koki Agata that moved Metzger to 3-2 in singles play within the conference this season.
In the remaining four singles decisions, Piedmont dropped only two total games with Trey Martin and Robbie Werner taking 6-0, 6-0 decisions at the #3 and #5 singles spots respectively. Martin’s win is his fifth in singles play on the year while Werner is now an even 7-7 in singles action.
Mason Riza won at #4 singles 6-0, 6-1 to move his overall singles record to a team-best 9-4 while Bryan Barnett accounted for the win at #6 singles in 6-1, 6-0 fashion for a win in his first USA South singles match.
Piedmont will be back in action honoring its seniors at tomorrow’s match vs. Huntingdon College at Burgen Tennis Courts with the first serve set to drop at 12:00 pm.
