The Town of Alto has secured funding for three fully-equipped police patrol vehicles through a federally-backed loan program.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced this week it’s investing $70,400 in Alto through its rural development Community Facilities Direct Loan Program.
The money will be used to purchase vehicles to improve emergency services and public safety.
The USDA is investing a total of $394 million to improve critical facilities in 28 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Of that, $513,000 is being loaned to four towns and cities in Georgia, including Alto.
USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas.
“Modern facilities for essential services such as schools, first responders, hospitals and health clinics are the bedrock to healthy and prosperous communities,” said USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Donald “DJ” LaVoy in announcing loans on November 14. He stressed the agency’s commitment to rural investment and added, “when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
The USDA is headed by former Georgia governor Sonny Perdue.
