The Habersham County Sheriff’s Department is receiving state-wide recognition for its achievements in highway safety enforcement and education. The department was awarded 2nd place in it’s size category during the annual Governor’s Challenge Awards banquet this week in Macon.
The event is sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. According to the GOHS website, the awards program recognizes agencies for the approach and effectiveness of their overall highway safety programs. It states, “Agencies are evaluated not just on enforcement initiatives, but for innovative problem-solving in their communities, using public information activities and creating departmental policies that support their traffic enforcement campaign efforts.”
Habersham County took 2nd place honors in the “26-50 Officers” category. The Milledgeville and Snellville Police Departments placed 1st and 3rd in the category, respectively.
“I’m proud of the work Habersham County has accomplished and I want to congratulate Sheriff Joey Terrell on their achievement,” said GOHS Director Harris Blackwood. “We hope to continue seeing them at Governor’s Challenge for years to come.”
“For more than a decade, we’ve been rewarding those law enforcement agencies who, no matter their size, do their very best and more to keep their roads and highways as safe as possible for their community,” said GOHS Law Enforcement Services Director Powell Harrelson. “Every year, we look forward to recognizing our Governor’s Challenge winners for their continued dedication to highway safety.”
