NGTC Foundation to host 17th Annual Memorial Bridge Party

The North Georgia Technical College Foundation Board of Trustees is planning the 17th Annual bridge party in memory of former Trustee Marvin Scobee. The party is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, at the Currahee Campus of NGTC. You may register for either social bridge or sanctioned duplicate bridge.

The luncheon, prepared by students in the Culinary Program at NGTC, begins at 11:30 a.m. with bridge getting underway at 12:30 p.m.

The cost is a $30 and all proceeds will go to the Marvin Scobee Memorial Scholarship Fund for GED students.

The man behind the memorial

Marvin Scobee came to North Georgia Technical College in 1999 as an Adult Education Instructor and became a friend of all who knew him. After funding was cut for the program, he continued to volunteer his time in jails throughout the school’s service area. By the time he was no longer physically able to continue his work, he had taught, tested and encouraged over 500 students to receive their GED.

Scobee’s passion for changing lives led him to utilize his favorite hobby, bridge, to benefit students who could not afford to pay for the GED exam. He and his wife, Jo, spearheaded bridge parties for years and raised thousands of dollars so that students could receive their GED and go to work or continue their education.

The cost to complete the exam is $184; to date, the NGTC Foundation has provided scholarships to assist 815 students in obtaining their GED.
