Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell is warning the public about a mail scam that was recently brought to his attention.
The sheriff’s office posted two photos of a seemingly official letter sent to a county resident threatening action if a tax debt is not paid. The notice is printed on letterhead that says it’s from the “Tax Processing Unit” of Habersham County “Public Judgement Records” and lists a 1-800 phone number.
The letter tells the recipient they owe tax money to the State of Georgia. It threatens that, if they don’t respond by a certain date and pay in full, actions will be taken such as garnishment of wages and bank accounts, property seizures, federal tax refund offset, and creation of a property lien.
The letter is ‘signed’ at the bottom above the title “Assigned Resolution Agent Signature”.
“This letter is a scam,” the sheriff’s post states. “This is not the way the State of Georgia notifies you that you owe taxes.” He urges the public, “Please don’t fall for this.”
The sheriff also encourages people to help get the word out by telling their families about the scam.
