Brace for more traffic headaches as GDOT road work in Cornelia continues

A road resurfacing project that caused major traffic headaches Thursday in Cornelia could cause more trouble in the coming days.

“In the effort to get the paving completed in the next two weeks the contractors are allowed to work per the contract without any restrictions,” GDOT spokesperson Katie Strickland tells Now Habersham.

The road work stalled traffic, backing up vehicles in all directions at the light. One driver complained on social media that it took nearly thirty minutes to get through the intersection from Cannon Bridge Road. Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith called it a “mess”.

Chief Smith expressed his concern about traffic safety. He spoke with the construction site supervisor and Georgia DOT representative who told him “people are just going to have to wait.”

“This is outside of the Police Department’s control,” a post to the Cornelia Police Department Facebook page states, “however we are monitoring it for traffic safety and we request that everyone just be patient.”
