Family member says mysterious rock-thrower helped save the sleeping residents

The residents of a small apartment complex in Cornelia had a close call when fire broke out inside their apartment building overnight. The blaze gutted the structure at 438 Irvin Street.

Cherri Hendrix’s son lived in one of the four apartment units. She learned about the fire when her son called to tell her about it at 12:15 a.m. Friday. Cornelia firefighters responded to the scene and were assisted by units from Habersham County. Firefighters remained on site for several hours.

Hendrix says all thirteen residents were left homeless.

“They have all pretty much lost all their possessions,” she tells Now Habersham. “A couple of the boys were literally in shorts with no shirts or shoes.”

A rock-throwing ‘savior’
Cherri Hendrix says a rock-throwing stranger woke up the sleeping residents and they all managed to get out alive.

The Red Cross is putting up the displaced residents in a local hotel. And while it’s a huge loss, Hendrix says it could have been much worse if not for a mysterious stranger.

“Everyone in all of the apartments were sleeping. Someone passing by threw a rock through one of the bedroom windows to wake one of the residents who was able to wake everyone else and get them out,” she says.

Hendrix refers to the mysterious rock thrower as a “savior”.

“The savior left site before anyone could get his name. Just poof gone,” Hendrix says.

Residents are now waiting to find out if any of their belongings survived. “We don’t know exact needs yet until we can get back in and see if anything is salvageable,” says Hendrix.

Despite the uncertainty and loss, the Hendrix family is counting their blessings. “My son is healthy and still alive so we are thankful.”
