Southampton, Bermuda – The Piedmont College men’s golf team competed in a unique event earlier today traveling to participate in the Bermuda Collegiate hosted by Berry College at the famed Port Royal Golf Club. The event is the first hosted by the Vikings outside of the United States and the Lions have tied for 3rd place of the five teams participating in the inaugural event which is set to possibly becoming an alternating annual event with a women’s tourney to occur next season.
“This was a unique opportunity and we hope the event can grow into something special,” said Brian Farrer, the Vikings’ head coach. “The tournament will be the first collegiate golf event on Bermuda. The department of tourism really opened the doors for us and helped make the Bermuda Collegiate Invitational a reality.”
Piedmont shot a 321 in round one which was hosted at the Port Royal Golf Club with the second round set to take place at the Tucker’s Point Golf Club on the northeast end of Bermuda. Port Royal is on the west side of the main island near Fairmont Southampton Resort which houses the five competing teams.
The Lions saw two of their own take top ten spots in the individual standings as Sam Hill fired a 76, 5-over par, to earn sole possession of 5th place in the 31-person field. Berry’s Ryan Elmore finished atop the leaderboard with his 1-over 72.
Also in the top ten for PC is veteran Joseph Morris who stroked a 78 to tie for 7th place in the field with four other competitors. Berry also tops the 5-team leaderboard as well shooting a 305 as a squad, 21-over par.
Jake Forbes and Aaron VanKempen finished within a stroke of each other as Forbes posted an 83 in the first round while Vankempen followed close behind with his 84. Forbes is 24th in the 31-member field while Vankempen is in a two-way tie for 25th.
Austin Coleman rounded out the grouping with an 87, 16-over par, placing him 29th.
