Rhodes College Too Strong For Piedmont College

Demorest, GA – The Piedmont College men’s tennis team fell in a non-conference matchup with Rhodes College earlier today by a 7-2 score line at Burgen Tennis Courts.  Two singles decisions went three sets while no doubles decision was decided by more than two games in the Lions’ loss.

Piedmont fell in two tight doubles decisions 8-6 but rallied at #1 doubles to head into singles play down just one after the pair of New Zealand imports, Matthew Metzger and brother Nathan Metzger, came back from down 7-2 to win 9-8 (7-5).  The two moved to 4-3 in doubles action together this season with the win, but the team trailed following the doubles portion after Rhodes rallied to win at #2 and #3 doubles for a 2-1 lead.

Rhodes would go on to claim five of the six singles decisions as Mason Riza accounted for Piedmont’s lone decision winning at #4 in three sets.  Riza dropped the first set 6-7 (5-7), but rallied to win the second 7-5 before claiming the match in tiebreak fashion 10-5.  Riza is now 7-2 in singles play in 2014-15 picking up his second straight win and his fifth in his last six singles showings.

The loss drops Piedmont to now 3-4 on the season as the Lions have dropped three straight, the second consecutive 7-2 loss for PC.

Piedmont will look to get back on track when the Green and Gold hosts conference member LaGrange College for a 1:00 pm afternoon match on Sunday, March 22 at Burgen Tennis Courts.
