Saturday storm damages buildings in White County

(Cleveland)- A line of early morning thunderstorms Saturday spawned some strong winds that resulted in widespread damage in the Leaf Community east of Cleveland as well as other sections of the county.

The winds knocked down numerous trees and power lines, especially in the area of Duncan Bridge between Highway 115 and 254. That section of the road was closed for several hours while power crews cleaned up the lines and road crews cleared the roadway.

White County Emergency Management Agency Director David Murphy set a command post at Chattahoochee Baptist Church. Murphy advised that Duncan Bridge Road is closed to traffic between Highway 115 and 254.

Chattahoochee Baptist Church had minor structural damage and their church van had a window blown out. The roof was blown off storage building next to Leaf Grocery. Some other structural damage in scattered areas of the county.

Murphy, there were no reported injuries.

Officials believe the damage was possibly was caused by a downburst or straight-line winds, but the National Weather Service will make the final determination.
