Eighteen Tallulah Falls School middle school students recently competed for the honor of top TFS spellers in the preliminary round of the annual Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) Spelling Bee. Emerging victoriously to represent Tallulah Falls School were eighth grader Olivia Tarr of Baldwin and sixth grader Mary Ellen Sanders of Hartwell. The pair advanced to round one of the GISA Spelling bee which was held at Mill Springs Academy in Alpharetta.
The Mill Springs competition featured sixty students from thirty independent schools. Tarr and Sanders both completed the competition within the group of top fifteen spellers. They advanced to the second round of the spelling bee competition.
Middle school world history and world geography instructor Nancy Almoyan coordinates the spelling bee for TFS. “This year has been more challenging for our students because a new component – vocabulary – has been added to the Scripps National Spelling Bee format” said Almoyan. “The students are now required to not only spell words but to define them as well. This different element has definitely added a new twist on preparation for the competition.”
