Former Demorest mayor dies

Former Demorest Mayor, J. Perry Hendrix, will be laid to rest this week in the city that he loved and served for most of his 85 years.  Hendrix was mayor of Demorest for four years from 1971-1978 and served as a city councilman for twenty eight years from 1981-2009.  He also served on the Habersham County Water Authority.

In addition to his public duties, Hendrix made a career at Ethicon where he was plant superintendent for 39 years.  He retired from the company in 1986.  Hendrix was a graduate of Piedmont College, a member of Cornelia First Presbyterian Church and a charter and life member of the Habersham Rotary Club.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. on Friday, September 26, at Whitfield Funeral Home’s North Chapel in Demorest. Funeral services will immediately follow at  3 p.m. with interment in Demorest City Cemetery.  (see obituaries for more details)
